Zubair had Rs 9 899. He purchased household things for Rs 7 545. How much amount was left with him?

Total amount = 9899

Amount paid = 7545

Amount left = 9899 – 7545 = 2354

Step 1

Subtract ones from ones. 9 ones – 5 ones = 4 ones. Write 4 at ones column.

Step 2

Subtract tens from tens. 9 tens – 4 tens = 5 tens. Write 5 at tens column.

Step 3

Subtract hundreds from hundreds. 8 hundreds – 5 hundreds = 3 hundreds. Write 3 at hundreds column.

Step 4

Subtract thousands from thousands. 9 thousands – 7 thousands = 2 hundreds. Write 2 at thousands column.

Information: Always subtract a smaller number from a greater number.

# Subtraction with borrowing

Ali has 2 354 coins and Wali has 1 260 coins. How much more coins Ali have than Wali?

Number of coins Ali has = 2354

Number of coins Wali has = 1260

Difference = 2354 – 1260 = 1094

Thus, Ali has 1 094 more coins than Wali.

Step 1

Subtract ones from ones. 4 ones – 0 ones = 4 ones Write 4 t ones column.

Step 2

Subtract tens from tens.
We cannot subtract 6 tens from 5 tens.
Therefore we will borrow 1 hundred from hundreds.
Then 1 hundred + 5 tens = 10 tens + 5 tens = 15 tens

Now, 15 tens – 6 tens = 9 tens
Write 9 at tens column.

Step 3

Subtract hundreds from hundreds.
after giving 1 hundreds to tens. 2 hundreds are left.
Therefore, 2 hundreds = 2 hundreds = 0 hundreds.
Write 0 at hundreds column.

Step 4

Subtract thousands from thousands. 2 thousands – 1 thousands = 1 thousands Write 1 at thousands column.

Thus Ali has 1094 more coin than Wali.
